Episode 004 A founder’s account

Cannabis. Clinics. Concierge.

Life threw massive lemons. I learned mental

Menopause, a late autism and ADHD diagnosis, three visits from the Grim Reaper, and the simple thing I couldn’t find. So I built it.

Yesterday I told you the Grim Reaper had come knocking three times. I promised you more. Here it is.

Cannabis saved my life. The cannabis cowboys very nearly took it back. And a concierge service, of all things, has rebuilt me.

When the wheels on my bus of life fell off, I was hit in the face by what can only be described as a violent menopausal biological war. Then I was scooped off the floor by my very sweet doctor, who told me he believed I was autistic, with a sprinkle of ADHD.

And that, my friends, was why everything felt so incredibly shit.

Plant medicine. A late neurodivergent diagnosis. Menopause. Three doors I needed open at once. Turns out I wasn’t the only one standing outside them.

Spoiler:
it’s not just me.

I’m back.

The break(down)

Three visits from the Grim Reaper · 2012 to 2023

Jade in a hospital bed in 2023 with a feeding tube taped to her nose, giving a thumbs up.
Visit no. 3.
Still doing thumbs up.
  • Visits from the Grim Reaper 3 2012 · 2016 · 2023 · STILL HERE He keeps knocking. I keep not answering.
  • Opiates required on discharge 0 THEY DID TRY TO MAKE ME Cannabis was my medicine. It healed me deeply.

Cannabis was the medicine that kept me here. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

Then came the part nobody warns you about. It wasn’t the illness that nearly finished me. It was the people.

In 2023, while I was in hospital losing half my intestines, my business was taken from me. The cowboys in this industry nearly managed what the Grim Reaper couldn’t.

So I stopped. I broke down. Properly.

The rebuild

The Clinics Concierge · now live

The Clinics Concierge launch post: Jade in an orange cardigan beside the words Now live. I couldn’t find it. So I built it. Access, simplified. UK private clinics, side by side: Plant Medicine, ADHD and Autism, Menopause. theclinicsconcierge.com.
Access, simplified.
Finally.
  • Specialisms at launch 3 PLANT MEDICINE · ADHD & AUTISM · MENOPAUSE UK private clinics, side by side.

While I was putting myself back together, I went looking for something simple: one clear, honest place to see which clinics exist, what they offer and how to reach them.

It didn’t exist.

So I built it. The Clinics Concierge puts UK private clinics side by side, so you can compare them without needing a PhD in Googling.

How I got here

  1. 2012My bowel stopped working and a large part of it was removed. Grim Reaper, visit no. 1.
  2. 2016Housebound, and on so many drugs I couldn’t live independently, I asked my husband to help me depart planet Earth. He said no. Best “no” I’ve ever had.
  3. ThenI found Charlotte’s Web. The Stanley Brothers saved my life, and I went on to help pioneer the UK’s CBD and cannabis space.
  4. 2018The law changed. Prescriptions became possible, but almost none for the kids: the very reason this industry existed. Crazy, huh?
  5. 2023Grim Reaper, visit no. 3. Half my intestines gone. No large intestine left, and some of the small. And my business was taken from me while I was dying.
  6. NowDischarged with no opiates required. Back on my feet, back in the office, and The Clinics Concierge is live.

The needs don’t change

With Savage Cabbage, I looked after 9,000 families in 43 countries, until regulatory changes curtailed access for many of them around the world.

The thing is, the needs don’t change. Those people still exist.

The headlines move on. The rules move on. The families don’t get to.

Left in the lurch

People put their faith in clinics and healthcare providers. But as we know, a number of patients have been left in the lurch: clinics going insolvent, medication being a little unsuitable, perhaps, and nobody picking up the phone to answer “what now?”

“Perhaps.”
I’m being very polite.

When you’re unwell, the last thing you need is a scavenger hunt. You need a straight answer and a door that opens.

A rising tide floats all boats

I wanted to create a hub. A place where a rising tide floats all boats, and where patients, clinics, educators and support networks come together with some much-desired harmony.

When we work in healthcare, working in a silo is detrimental to the growth and support of all. Nobody gets better on their own little island.

So, yes. I’m back.

New wallpaper. On-brand cardigan. Same lipstick. Same stubborn streak.

“My unwavering support for those in need of support and guidance is as strong as ever.”

If you’re a patient, a clinic, an educator or part of a support network, come and find me. There’s room on this boat.

Today, and every day, I’m remembering the patients. Especially the children, whose stories made this entire industry possible.

Ask your doctor. Not a cowboy.

Big love,
Jade x

The discharge note

No opiates required.
They did try.

Eight years after the UK legalised medical cannabis on prescription, help for patients is still fragmented, and too many fall through the gaps. I plan to change that.
